Gruntz Kickstarter Preview:
Epic WWI Tactics in a Tiny Magnetic Box
Review by Lincoln Hoppe: The Game Bard
INTRO
Can a game fit infantry, tanks, aircraft and epic victories into a box this small? That’s the question I found myself asking when I first laid eyes on Gruntz. This deceptively compact tactical game promises World War I battlefield action with magnetic vehicle attachments and chess-like strategic depth. But can something so small really deliver on such big promises?
The answer surprised me. Gruntz doesn’t just deliver – it exceeds expectations in ways that left me genuinely impressed with how much tactical gameplay can fit into such a tiny package.
This text is taken from my video review.
“Gruntz feels more elegant than I expected – like a civilized game of chess with moves, counter moves, deployment and vehicle build choices that create a beautifully puzzling tactical dream.”
GAME OVERVIEW
Gruntz is a two-player tactical war game set in World War I, designed for players who crave strategic depth without complex rule overhead. In this chess-like battlefield experience, you’ll command grunts, captains, tanks, trucks, and aircraft across a compact map, racing to achieve victory through either territorial control or a daring assault on enemy headquarters.
The game offers two distinct paths to victory: collect three victory stars by controlling key battlefield positions with your units, or achieve instant victory by moving your captain directly onto the enemy headquarters deep behind enemy lines. This dual victory condition creates fascinating tactical tension from the very first turn.
What makes Gruntz truly special are the magnetic vehicle attachments. Tanks and trucks can be equipped with cannons, anti-aircraft guns, or grunt spawn points – all interchangeable through satisfying magnetic connections that add both tactical variety and pure tactile joy to every game.
CORE MECHANISM DEEP DIVE
The heart of Gruntz lies in its elegantly simple turn structure that opens into complex strategic possibilities. Each turn, you choose between two actions: move two units and deploy one fresh unit from reinforcements, or move one unit and deploy two units. That’s it – that’s a complete turn.
But this apparent simplicity masks incredible depth. The captain movement mechanic transforms everything. When your captain moves, all adjacent soldiers move with him, imitating his movement and creating the genuine feeling of a leader bringing troops into battle. This single mechanic opens sweeping battlefield maneuvers where you can move entire formations with just one movement action.
Different unit types add layers of tactical consideration. Grunts and captains move one space in any direction. Tanks lumber up to two spaces in straight orthogonal lines. Trucks zip up to three spaces in straight lines, making them the fastest and most flexible ground units. Aircraft soar across the battlefield along connected air spaces around the map’s edges.
Combat follows rock-paper-scissors principles with immediate destruction – when any unit moves into a space with an enemy it can attack, that enemy is immediately destroyed. But each unit type has specific targets they can and cannot engage, creating amped-up tactical decisions on every move.
GAMEPLAY & SCORING
The gameplay creates a beautifully woven web of cause and effect where every decision ripples across the battlefield. You’re constantly planning ahead, but your opponent’s moves will force you to adapt and change tactics – sometimes your entire strategy.
The limited vehicle supply adds crucial resource management. When grunts and captains get destroyed, they return to your supply for redeployment. But vehicles are gone forever once destroyed, making every tank and truck deployment a significant strategic commitment.
Air power adds another dimension entirely. Aircraft can only travel along certain paths around the map’s edges, which can lull you into a false sense of security. You might focus on ground movements and suddenly realize you’ve positioned your tank directly in a bomber’s flight path – or you might use this distraction to slip a fighter deployment past your opponent’s notice.
The magnetic vehicle attachments aren’t just satisfying to use – they’re tactically meaningful. Choosing between a cannon, anti-aircraft gun, or grunt spawn point for your vehicles creates meaningful decisions that can shift the entire battlefield dynamic.
COMPONENTS & EMOTIONAL IMPACT
The components in Gruntz punch well above their weight class. The painted wooden meeples feel substantial and charming, while the magnetic vehicle attachments provide genuine tactile satisfaction every time you customize your forces. There’s something deeply satisfying about snapping different attachments onto your vehicles that never gets old.
The compact size is genuinely impressive – this box is smaller than two homemade sandwiches stacked together, yet contains a complete tactical war game with multiple unit types, magnetic customization, and strategic depth that rivals much larger games.
Emotionally, Gruntz delivers that wonderful “wow, that’s puzzling” feeling similar to games like Boop. You see the simple components and straightforward rules, then dive in to discover layers of tactical complexity that create genuine brain-burn moments. It’s thrust and parry as the adorable meeple battlefield constantly changes, forcing adaptation and tactical creativity.
VERDICT
Gruntz has earned a well-deserved spot in my collection. The fact that it contains so much strategy and tactical gameplay in a box smaller than two sandwiches is simply fantastic. I love the back-and-forth on every turn, the constant need to plan ahead while adapting to your opponent’s moves, and the satisfying magnetic customization that adds both tactical depth and pure joy.
This game is ideal for players who want simple rules that open great puzzles and possibilities, those who enjoy chess-like dueling games, and anyone who loves the satisfying balance of strategy and tactics without luck interfering with their plans. The compact size makes it wonderful for travel, while the magnetic components and painted meeples provide premium feel despite the small package.
Gruntz might not suit players who dislike puzzle games, need larger player counts, or want complex rules and narrative storytelling. But for those seeking tactical depth in a portable package, Gruntz delivers deceptively simple, strategic, customizable magnetic puzzle fun that feels genuinely epic despite its tiny footprint.
When it all comes down to it, Gruntz is simply fun – really fun tactical puzzle fun that proves great things truly do come in small packages.
